How do I know if my dog is poisoned or just old?

A lot of times after dogs get into something poisonous they drink a lot of water. It is cruel not to take her to the vet to at least give her something for pain if it isn't anything they can cure. Think of how you would feel if you were in that condition... dogs have feelings too.
