Question about native american pow wows?

I'm only 1/16 cherokee and can't prove it but from ppl tell me I look indian but anyway if I wanted to participate in any native american festivities in my area would I have to have doents to prove my heritage or is it just like a open house thing go there and have a good time and leave?
